"Trial By Fear" is a Young Adult Fantasy novel that follows a young, reluctant hero named Beon. The story carries along at a quick pace, though potentially to it's own detriment. While only a small portion of the writing is dedicated to building the fantasy world, it still manages to read as well thought out and robust. While there isn't much depth to the side characters, the main character of Beon is fully imagined and the reader gets a detailed insight into what drives him as a character.
The major problem with this story is its very short length. When you get to the end, it doesn't feel like much has been covered. Two main antagonists are introduced towards the beginning, but afterwards are only revisited in offhand comments from other characters. It leaves thinking that you somehow lost the remaining 2/3rds of the story.
"Trial By Fear" is otherwise very well written and enjoyable read. Beon is an interesting character, and the world of Er is intriguing, all just leaving me as a reader wishing there was more.
I spoke with the author of "Trial By Fear" about the length/incompleteness of the story complain, and he explained to me that "Trial By Fear" is meant to be just a small part in a larger, serialized story. I have to admit that my unfamiliarity with this type of story telling, at least when it comes to books, has fogged up my opinion on the story. Mr. Arrington did mention that once the second installment of the series is finished he plans on re-publishing "Trial By Fear" with some more content at the end to try and alleviate some of these concerns.
